Hock B sample positive

Wigan and England forward Gareth Hock is facing an automatic two-year ban after his B sample tested positive for a banned substance.

The 25-year-old second rower has been suspended for the last fortnight after a urine sample was found to contain traces of Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

Wigan on Tuesday revealed that the follow-up sample also tested positive and Hock will now appear before a national anti-doping panel.

The usual punishment, in line with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations, is a two-year suspension.

Hock was tested following Wigan's home Super League match against Salford last month and he was immediately suspended by the Rugby Football League.

In a statement, Wigan said: "The club reiterates its position of deploring and condemning the use of drugs in sport including the use of so-called recreational drugs."

Wigan would not comment further at this stage and the RFL had no comment.

Hock, who is contracted to the Warriors to the end of the 2011 season, is potentially the most high-profile drugs offender in rugby league.

His last match was for England in their 66-12 win over France in Paris on June 13. He also played in three of England's games at the 2008 World Cup and was a member of Great Britain's Tri-Nations touring squad in 2006.

The Wigan-born player was in trouble with officials last July when he was banned for five matches for tugging the arm of a referee during a match against Huddersfield. The news comes just six months after rugby union star Matt Stevens, of England and Bath, was banned for two years after admitting a cocaine addiction.
