Hock in the dock

Wigan forward Gareth Hock must await the outcome of a disciplinary hearing that could cost him a place in the World Cup.

Second-rower Hock was punished for dissent and was then shown the red card after appearing to push referee Ian Smith in Wigan's shock 34-4 home defeat to Huddersfield.

He will automatically appear before the RFL's disciplinary panel on Tuesday and looks likely to be charged with "behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game", which carries a minimum suspension of eight matches but Wigan only have five regular-season games remaining.

The League will clarify his charge on Monday but physical abuse of match officials is regarded as the most serious of offences.

The defeat dealt a blow to the Warriors hopes of securing a top-four finish and with it a home tie.

Hock is likely to be a candidate for England's 24-strong squad for the World Cup, which kicks off on October 25 when Tony Smith's men open their campaign against Papua New Guinea.

The Wigan player missed the start of the season through suspension, having picked up a two-match ban for a dangerous throw in his side's last match of 2007.

He also missed six matches with a broken thumb and was forced to sit out England's mid-season international against France because of a hamstring injury.
