Hoggard doubtful for first Test

Matthew Hoggard has emerged as a major doubt for England's first npower Test against India at Lord's, after suffering a back spasm in training.

The 30-year-old Yorkshire seamer was sent for an MRI scan after training to determine the extent of the injury he suffered during net practice on Tuesday.

Hoggard carried on bowling on Tuesday but felt discomfort again on Wednesday and is regarded as "extremely doubtful", according to an England spokesman, to take his place in England's line-up for the opening Test.

Should Hoggard be ruled out, it would leave England with an inexperienced line-up to take on India's highly-regarded batsmen and without a single member of their 2005 Ashes-winning attack.

Main spearhead Steve Harmison was ruled out of the series and has since undergone surgery for a hernia complaint; Andrew Flintoff is still recovering from ankle surgery, and Simon Jones has only just returned to action after knee problems.

It leaves England to field a seam attack likely to comprise three of James Anderson, Ryan Sidebottom and the uncapped Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett.
