The 30-year-old Yorkshire seamer sustained the injury during net practice on Tuesday and although he was able to take part in full practice that day, he was restricted yesterday and underwent an MRI scan.

Hoggard revealed he was initially pain-free during a fitness test but returned for a second spell and found he could not run in to bowl.

Hoggard said in The Times: "If I told you exactly how frustrated I'm feeling, there would be an awful lot of asterisks in this column and I know that Times readers are a sensitive bunch, so I'll restrict myself to saying I feel mightily peeved."

Hoggard is now waiting for the results of yesterday's scan.

His absence leaves England with one of their most inexperienced attacks in recent history.
