Hoggard rues Chanderpaul chance

Matthew Hoggard moved up England's rank of Test wicket-takers on a rain-shortened second day at Chester-le-Street but was left to rue the one that got away.

Yorkshire fast bowler Hoggard drew level with sixth-placed Alec Bedser on 236 Test wickets when he trapped Chris Gayle leg before early on. The 30-year-old might have then doubled his tally for the day when Shivnarine Chanderpaul flashed to third slip with West Indies struggling on 43 for three - but Ian Bell floored the chance as the West Indians closed on 132 for four.

He said: "To get Chanderpaul would have been very nice, he's been in decent form and he's always a nasty one to give a chance to. It would have been nice to see, if we had got him out early, whether we could have taken the opportunity to bowl them out."

He added: "There are a fair few number of overs left and with the wicket doing a little bit there's an opportunity to finish it before the five days are up," said Hoggard.

"It seemed to come out all right for me, I am not sure how I will feel on Sunday but everything is okay at the moment.

"I had got genuine nerves going into the game - obviously with conditions and the wicket being under cover for two days there is pressure added because it suits my style of bowling and you have to swing it.

Former county colleague Ryan Sidebottom claimed a wicket with the first delivery of the match - when hapless West Indies captain Daren Ganga turned straight to short-leg - and had a hand in three of the four dismissals.

"He's done really well," Hoggard said. "He has done exactly what he came into the side to do - bowled with consistency and control."

Steve Harmison also appeared to have ironed out his recent problems under the tutelage of temporary bowling consultant Allan Donald, a team-mate of Hoggard's for Free State in the late 1990s.

"When we are in South Africa we have a chinwag but it's normally a text message every now and again," said Hoggard, who has kept in touch with Donald since those early days of his career. "They are normally texts saying 'glad I'm not bowling on that flat fart' when I am in Pakistan or India 'it looks like hard work'."
