The 44-year-old took over at Home Park in the summer of 2006 and led the Pilgrims to an 11th-placed finish in his first season. This term, Holloway has guided the club to seventh place but has recently been linked with the vacant position at Coca-Cola Championship rivals Leicester.
A club statement on the club's official website, www.pafc.co.uk, read: "Plymouth Argyle confirm that Ian Holloway has tendered his resignation as manager of the club."
The statement continued: "The club has convened a board meeting for Friday this week where this will be considered.
"In the meantime, Ian continues to be employed by the club and subject to the terms of his contract of employment.
"No further comment will be made pending the board meeting this Friday."
