Home help for Hampshire

Hampshire made the most of home advantage to book a Friends Provident Trophy final against Durham on August 18 with a hard-working 40-run victory over Warwickshire.

John Crawley's 65 in the Hawks' 206 for seven and two quick wickets each for Shane Warne and Sean Ervine, as Warwickshire's reply lost four for 21 in eight overs, remain worthy of individual mention.

But the most important factor was Hampshire's knowledge of their own Rose Bowl patch and consequent ability to defend what appeared a slightly below-par total on a typically sluggish pitch.

Warwickshire must have thought they had a better than even chance of a successful chase, and were still marginal favourites as long as Kumar Sangakkara was in situ.

But once Ervine made up for dropping the Sri Lankan at slip off Warne on 43 by having him caught at square-leg just one run later, the equation began to ebb away from the visitors.

Too much was required of admirable wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Ambrose, who nonetheless added a valiant but vain 41 to the outstanding work he had earlier done behind the stumps.
