Hoops closing in on Mowbray

Celtic will aim to confirm Tony Mowbray as their new manager on Monday after being given permission to speak to the West Brom manager.

On Saturday, the Glasgow club finally agreed to meet the £2million compensation fee written into Mowbray's Baggies contract.

Personal terms are unlikely to be a problem for the former Hoops defender but a deal for his backroom staff may hold up Celtic's official announcement.

West Brom will also seek compensation for releasing Mark Venus, Mowbray's assistant since his Hibernian days, and coach Peter Grant.

The former Middlesbrough defender is likely to be a popular appointment thanks to the bond he enjoyed with the Celtic support during his playing days and the attractive brand of football he has instilled throughout his coaching career.

Despite the deal not being signed, speculation has already begun as to who his first signings will be.

West Brom captain Paul Robinson has admitted he would like to follow Mowbray to Celtic Park while another left-back, out-of-contract Real Sociedad player Xabi Castillo, is apparently keen on moving to Celtic.

Midfielder Borja Valero and striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, who was on loan from Nancy, have also been linked with a move to Parkhead from Albion.
