Hopkins to retire

Harlequins' tough-tackling forward Lee Hopkins is to retire at the end of the season at the age of 29.

The Sydney-born second-rower, whose wife is expecting their first child in November, will hang up his boots after three years with the Londoners and return to Australia.

"It has been a fantastic three years and I'd like to thank all the fans who have given me so much support," he said. "With a child on the way, we thought it was the right time to return to Australia and our family. There are some things which are more important than rugby league."

Harlequins coach Brian McDermott said: "Lee's departure is a huge blow to the club, but it is a decision which he had to come to himself. We will not only be losing a quality player but also a great person to have in the club."
