Horseplay comes easy to Weekley

Colourful American Boo Weekley provided one of the images of the Ryder Cup last year when he bounded off the first tee of his singles like a jockey riding a horse.

"I still can't believe I really did that looking back at it," said Weekley, who is at Loch Lomond for the Barclays Scottish Open this week.

"But you never know. I mean, if I've got a 10-stroke lead on 18 (on Sunday) I might ride it all the way up the fairway. I might even walk on water."

Weekley is also over on this side of the Atlantic for next week's Open at Turnberry, of course, and has not lost sight of just how far he has come in the game.

"I played mini tours for five years, lived in the back of my truck, slept in the front," he said. "You might drive 10 hours from one event to the next and you're playing for 2-3,000 dollars. That was a lot of money back then. If I don't make a cheque where am I going to eat?"

No such worries now. He can stay in luxury accommodation wherever he goes, although it still sounds like a bit of a magical mystery tour.

"Like when I got here I didn't even know where I was staying," said the 35-year-old. "I just go. When I get to where I'm at I just keep asking the question until somebody finally takes me in."

Weekley also makes no secret of the fact that his knowledge of golf history is, to put it mildly, sketchy.

He did not know St Andrews was the Home of Golf and he added: "I was sitting in there with Sandy Lyle and I never even knew he won The Masters. Seriously, I don't keep up with golf. I kind of felt foolish after I said what I said because I didn't know."

He is among a number of US Tour stars in this week's field. They include Australians Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott and Stuart Appleby, South Africans Rory Sabbatini and Tim Clark and Weekley's fellow Americans Nick Watney and Brian Gay.
