Howell out of US Open

David Howell's quest for a first top-10 finish in a major will continue after the Englishman withdrew from the US Open at Oakmont on Monday with a wrist injury.

Now down to 35th in the world rankings, Howell revealed he injured his wrist a week ago while practising, as he said: "I didn't think I'd done anything damaging.

"So I hung around and didn't hit any balls at all until Sunday. I played nine holes here and it felt worse. We did a couple of tests on Monday and it probably deteriorated a little. So that's it, I'm afraid."

The 31-year-old climbed into the world's top 10 last year and finished 16th at Winged Foot, the venue of the 2006 tournament - this year, however has been a struggle.

Howell has withdrawn from his last two appearances on the PGA Tour - the Wachovia and Players Championship - and he tied for 44th at The Masters, hampered by a third-round 82. He also missed the PGA Championship at Wentworth with a bad back.
