Hoy sets world record

Olympic champion Chris Hoy has smashed the world 500metres record by over a second in Bolivia.

Edinburgh-born Hoy completed the half-kilometre distance in 24.758 seconds, easily beating Frenchman Arnaud Duble's previous mark of 25.85, which was set in 2001.

Hoy told BBC Sport: "It was an amazing feeling. I just felt as though I was flying down the back straight. I'm happy for the team to have done it."

Earlier in the day, Hoy went agonisingly close to setting a new record for the kilometre time trial.

Looking to better the mark of 58.875secs set by Arnaud Tournant in 2001, Hoy finished just five thousandths of a second outside the Frenchman's time.
