Hughes excited by SWP return

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes believes his club have delivered a real statement of intent by re-signing Shaun Wright-Phillips.

City put aside uncertainty over their financial position to bring the England winger back to Eastlands three years after his £21million sale to Chelsea.

"I think it sends a message and a statement of what we are about," said Hughes.

"I think people now understand that actually Man City is a place that is an interesting thought for many people at the moment.

"Players want to come and join us, they can see the ambition that we have and where we want to go.

"We have the means to attract top-quality players, which Shaun obviously is. There aren't many days left in the window and hopefully we'll be able to attract more before it closes."

Wright-Phillips has agreed a four-year deal at City after failing to make the anticipated impact at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old established himself as one of the country's most exciting talents during his previous seven-year spell at City, whom he joined after being released by Nottingham Forest at 15.

He featured in Chelsea's title-winning sides of 2005 and 2006 but his role was peripheral and he made only 43 starts for the club.
