Hughes hit by three-match ban

Scotland international Hughes was involved when Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off at Fratton Park in August and served a three-match suspension after appearing to butt him. And Hughes was shown a straight red card by referee Andrew Turner after 25 minutes of Portsmouth reserves' 1-0 win over Birmingham for a clash with Blues defender David Howland on Wednesday.
A Football Association spokesman said: "The player will be suspended for three matches from October 24 for a deliberate head-butt."
Hughes has made only one Barclays Premier League start this season but played a full part in both their previous Carling Cup wins over Leeds United and Burnley.
Due to the violent nature of the sending-off offence, Hughes's suspension will cover first-team games.
And although it is unlikely he would have been selected for the league fixtures at home to West Ham (October 28) and away to Newcastle (November 3), the Carling Cup fourth round clash with Blackburn would certainly have brought him into contention - even though Redknapp has already said he will "probably" pick his best side for the next round.
Meanwhile, Pompey's new £3 million midfielder Papa Bouba Diop has pulled out of a Senegal international training camp this week after damaging a hamstring in last Sunday's 2-0 win at his old club Fulham but should be fit for the trip to Wigan a week on Saturday.
And striker Nwankwo Kanu is on the mend from a knee injury which has kept him out of the last three matches after a visit to a specialist in France.
