Hull pull out of Murphy deal

Hull have withdrawn their interest in Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy after talks over personal terms broke down.

The Tigers agreed an initial fee of £1.5million with the Wearsiders for the player earlier this week and were due to meet the 26-year-old on Thursday.

The news is a further blow to the club after also failing in their attempts to sign Fraizer Campbell, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Michael Owen this summer.

Manager Phil Brown had made signing strikers his top priority after their lack of firepower became evident during the second half of last season.

Republic of Ireland international Murphy, who has also attracted interest from Ipswich, was identified as a potential target after failing to win a regular place in the Black Cats' starting line-up.

Brown will now have to turn his attention to Fulham forward Bobby Zamora after having a club record-equalling £5million bid accepted by the London club on Wednesday. Brown is hoping to meet with the former England Under-21 and West Ham forward after he returns from the Cottagers' pre-season tour of Australia at the weekend.

Recent comments from Roy Hodgson, however, may not be encouraging with the Fulham boss saying he would like to keep the 28-year-old at Craven Cottage.

"I can confirm that Hull are interested in him and have made a bid but I can't confirm that we're going to be prepared to let him go," Hodgson said.

"Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson have been excellent on the tour and if we lose him, he's going to be a hard man to replace, that's for sure. (So) that will be something that will be discussed when I get back.

"Obviously it's not been easy. I've been in touch all the time with the people at home, with the chief executive but with the time difference, it's not been as easy as it would be had I done the pre-season at home."
