Hunter gives Tiger hope

American Hunter Mahan gave hope to Tiger Woods and the rest of the chasing pack with a brilliant start to the third round of the Open Championship at Carnoustie today.

Mahan made the cut right on the mark of four over par and was in the second group out this morning at 8.40am.

The 25-year-old from Dallas came into the championship on the back of his first US Tour victory at the end of June, and finished eighth in the AT&T National hosted by Woods just a fortnight ago.

And he continued that good form with four birdies in his first six holes on an overcast morning which had so far not seen the heavy rain which had been forecast.

From a share of 53rd place overnight, Mahan was up into 13th on level par, six shots behind leader Sergio Garcia, who was not due out until 2.30pm alongside Korea's KJ Choi.

Choi was Garcia's closest challenger on four under, with Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Canada's Mike Weir on three under.

Woods was seven off the pace on one over after a second-round 74 which saw the defending champion hook his opening tee shot out of bounds and hit a number of wild shots.

Seeking a third-straight Open title, Woods was due to start his third round at 12.15pm alongside Austria's Markus Brier.
