I will fight for Owen - Kinnear

Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear said he will "fight like hell" to keep hold of Michael Owen after the striker scored the first goal in a 3-0 rout of Portsmouth.

Owen, who turned 29 on Sunday, is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with several other Barclays Premier League clubs, including a return to Liverpool.

"I've had a good relationship with Michael from day one," said Kinnear. "He's in control of his future. On Tuesday we will sit down to talk things through and his agent will be there. I will fight like hell to keep him."

He added: "I don't see any point taking money for Michael Owen. I would rather have him in my team scoring goals than any amount of cash.

"When I was a player I played with Jimmy Greaves and Michael is very similar."

Owen himself was vague about how advanced negotiations are, telling BBC Sport: "I think every back page today links me with a different club but none of it is my doing and I can't do anything until the club sit down and speak to me.

"Contract negotiations are usually a private thing but with me it never seems to be. It has attracted its fair share of interest over the last few months in particular, what with the takeover."

Portsmouth manager Tony Adams acknowledged Owen's ruthlessness, but backed his own striker Jermain Defoe despite him missing a host of chances.

"Michael has done that all his career," said Adams. "You switch off for two minutes and he can punish you.

"But I've got one of those as well and I wouldn't swap Jermain for Michael."
