According to Times Now and NDTV, the 58-year-old Australian sent an email to Ratnakar Shetty, chief administrative officer for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in which he cited personal and family reasons for the decision.
Chappell had been under increasing pressure after a disappointing World Cup campaign in the Caribbean which saw India exit at the group stages.
India suffered a surprise five-wicket loss to Bangladesh in their opening match and went down by 69 runs to Sri Lanka to finish only third in Group B and miss out on a place in the Super Eight phase.
Chappell will not be seeking an extension when his contract expires at the end of April.
Fans and a number of players seemed to turn against the coach following their elimination from the World Cup, with Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble both voicing their discontent.
In the email, Chappell reportedly labelled the role of India coach as "most challenging" but said he "tried to meet challenges in a professional way".
He added he was grateful to the players he has worked with and looks forward to continuing contact, wishing Indian cricket "joy and success in the future".
The BCCI, however, have not made any official announcement and still expect Chappell to attend a World Cup review meeting on Friday.
