India curtail Pakistan lead

India need 200 runs to win the First Test against Pakistan with nine wickets remaining after bowling out the tourists for 247 in the morning session in Delhi.

Resuming their second innings on 212 for five, Pakistan lost wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal in the first over of the day and never recovered as Zaheer Khan and Sourav Ganguly shared two wickets apiece to restrict the tourists' lead to 202.

But paceman Shoaib Akhtar struck just before lunch to remove opener Dinesh Karthik and leave the encounter delicately poised.

Looking to forge a useful advantage over their fierce rivals, Pakistan got off to a terrible start when Akmal edged a delivery from Zaheer to point and was dismissed for 21.

Sohail Tanvir was next to go for 13 when he skied an attempted pull off Zaheer to square leg where Harbhajan Singh took a well-judged catch to leave Shoaib Malik's side tottering on 229 for seven.

Any hope Pakistan had off squeezing some vital late runs from the tail disappeared when Misbah-ul-Haq, who top-scored with 82 in the first innings, departed for 45 after charging down the pitch to Ganguly but could only loft an attempted drive high into the air and Karthik pouched the catch.

Mohammed Sami was next to go for five after he top edged a heave off Ganguly to Wasim Jaffer at midwicket before Danish Kaneria was run out for a duck as Pakistan collapsed to 247 all out.

However, India could not negotiate a tricky period before lunch as Akhtar found the edge of Karthik's bat to dismiss the opener for one and leave India on three for one.
