India fail to take command

It was honours even between New Zealand and India on the opening day of the third and final Test in Wellington on Friday.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, New Zealand's efforts were rewarded as wickets fell regularly to have India 375 for nine at stumps at the Basin Reserve.

Ishant Sharma was 15 not out with fellow bowler Munaf Patel unbeaten on 14 at the close.

Sachin Tendulkar was the top scorer for the Indians with 62, his 53rd Test half-century, while India captain MS Dhoni, back in the side after missing the Test in Napier with a back problem, made 52 and put on a valuable 79-run stand with Harbhajan Singh, who made an entertaining 60.

The Indians scored 185 runs off 35 overs in the final session for the loss of just four wickets.

The only New Zealand bowler to come away wicketless was skipper Daniel Vettori (none for 47 off nine). Chris Martin got three and Tim Southee, who struggled early on, bagged a brace as did Iain O'Brien, while James Franklin and Jesse Ryder also enjoyed some success.

Martin got the prized wickets of Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and then removed Harbhajan late in the day to finish with three for 95 off 24 overs.

Southee was expensive but redeemed himself with the wickets of VVS Laxman and Dhoni as he ended the day with two for 94 off 18.

O'Brien (two for 88 of 21) got the first (Virender Sehwag) and last (Zaheer Khan) wickets of the day, although before the paceman departed he hit the seamer for four consecutive boundaries and a two in the over.

Franklin (one for 38 off 14) was unlucky not to have had more than one wicket, and Ryder (one for three off four) chipped in to ensure the Indians never really got on top.
