Openers Dinesh Karthik and Wasim Jaffer, who resumed on 10 without loss, both struck boundaries in the opening handful of overs but maintained a measured approach in their bid to reach a 73-run victory target.

Jaffer got things going with an inside edge to fine leg for a single off Ryan Sidebottom before clipping the same bowler for four through midwicket.

Karthik then seized on misdirection by James Anderson to crash a cut to the backward-point boundary.

The closest England came to a breakthrough was when left-armer Sidebottom appealed for a leg before decision against Karthik which was turned down by Simon Taufel because the ball pitched outside leg stump.
