India recover from shaky start
17 January 2008
Humiliated by a 158-run defeat in the opener to the seven-match series in Rajkot, the tourists made a flying start with Stuart Broad claiming three wickets inside the first eight overs to reduce India to 29 for three.
It was an outstanding start after India chose to bat on a slow pitch with uneven bounce, but instead of building on their early success, England watched Gambhir and Yuvraj forge a brilliant 124-run stand off 126 balls.
Nottinghamshire seamer Broad justified England's decision to retain the same line-up which conceded their highest ever total in a one-day international - 387 for five - just three days earlier.
His five-over new ball burst of three for 14 gave England renewed hope of making immediate amends for their mauling on Friday and restoring the momentum lost by recent poor performances in Antigua and in the warm-up matches in India.
Broad struck with his second ball when Virender Sehwag, who made 85 in the opening contest, attempted to cut a ball too close to him and chopped onto his own stumps.
Broad followed up with a second wicket in his next over with Suresh Raina, frustrated at being unable to play his shots on the slow, uneven wicket, mis-timing an attempted drive off his legs straight to Patel at square leg.
Rohit Sharma became Broad's third victim when he mis-timed an attempted pull high in the air and Owais Shah ran around from mid-wicket to take the catch.
Running well between the wickets and picking off loose boundaries, Yuvraj teamed up with Gambhir to reach their half-century partnership off just 61 balls and bring up the hundred partnership off 105 balls, leaving England scratching around to try and make the breakthrough.
Gambhir judged the conditions superbly to reach 70 off 76 balls, but the stand ended when he played on to Kevin Pietersen's off-spin.
