India seize control

India took the upper hand on the second day of the third Test against Australia in Perth thanks to a commanding display with the ball.

Having collapsed to 330 all out in the morning after losing their last four wickets for only two runs, India dismissed their hosts for 212 in the evening session and then moved onto 52 for one at stumps to establish a 170-run lead.

An inspired spell from RP Singh did most of the damage for India as he picked up four for 68, with Anil Kumble claiming two for 42 to become only the third player in history to move past 600 Test wickets.

Andrew Symonds (66) and Adam Gilchrist (55) briefly steadied the Australia innings with a fifth-wicket stand of 102 but the wickets tumbled after tea as the tourists seized control.

Resuming on 297 for six in the morning, Pathan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni batted patiently to take the score to 328 in the first 11 overs of the day before Dhoni was controversially dismissed by Stuart Clark.

Clark's bouncing delivery struck Dhoni's pad on the knee roll and, after a long pause, umpire Asad Rauf raised his finger although the Hawk-Eye replay suggested the ball was going over the stumps.

Dhoni's dismissal triggered a swift conclusion to the India innings with Pathan going lbw to Mitchell Johnson for the addition of only two more runs before Kumble was caught by Chris Rogers and RP Singh was caught by Michael Hussey.

Australia then slipped to 61 for five before the big-hitting pair of Gilchrist and Symonds feasted on the India attack with a magnificent counter-attacking display to put Australia back in contention.

However, the partnership did not continue far into the evening session as Australia crumbled from 148 for five to 212 all out.

Wasim Jaffer was the only Indian wicket to fall, the opener making 11 before getting an outside edge to a Clark delivery and finding Hussey at gully.
