IOC: No proof of underage gymnasts

Olympic chiefs on Friday claimed that there was still no proof that anyone cheated over the ages of several members of China's women gymnasts.

The Chinese women's team won the gold medal and the Chinese gymnastics federation has presented information to the International Olympic Committee to support its insistence that all the gymnasts were old enough to compete.

IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said the International Gymnastics Federation had been asked to investigate "what have been a number of questions and apparent discrepancies" and were satisfied with their reply.

"We believe the matter will be put to rest and there's no question on the eligibility," she said. "The information we have received seems satisfactory in terms of the correct documentation, including birth certificates."

A gymnast must be 16 in an Olympic year to compete at the games. But questions about the ages of at least three of the athletes have persisted.

Online records and media reports suggest three Chinese gymnasts - He Kexin, Yang Yilin and Jiang Yuyuan - might be as young as 14.
