Ireland edge out Italy

Ireland opened their RBS 6 Nations campaign with an unconvincing 16-11 victory over Italy at Croke Park.

Girvan Dempsey crossed in the 18th minute to hand Ireland an encouraging start and the kicking of Ronan O'Gara, who finished with 11 points, helped them control the first half.

But dogged Italy hit back through skipper Sergio Parisse in the 61st minute and Ireland were subjected to a nervous final quarter.

David Bortolussi also contributed two penalties for the visitors.

Still suffering from their inept performance at the World Cup, Ireland needed a strong start to the Six Nations to end four months of ceaseless criticism but fell well short.

The confidence drained from their play as the spoiling tactics and perseverance of Italy, fielding a rookie half-back combination of Andre Masi and Pietro Travagli, took their toll.

Coach Eddie O'Sullivan will be looking for a much-improved display from his side when they take on France at the Stade de France next weekend.
