Ireland escapes punishment

Stephen Ireland will escape punishment over his bizarre goalscoring celebration at Eastlands on Monday night.

In front of a live TV audience, the Manchester City midfielder pulled down his shorts to reveal a pair of skimpy briefs, sporting a Superman logo, after netting the goal which sealed a Barclays Premier League win over Sunderland.

Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted the Football Association may have wanted to take action against the 21-year-old, who has had his fair share of troubles already this term, however, instead, the FA have wisely decided merely to remind Ireland of his responsibilities to the game, a move which amounts to little more than a gentle rap on the knuckles.

The sensible course of action will meet with the favour of City officials, who had vowed to fight any stringent action, and also PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor.

"I think it is fair enough just to give him a warning," Taylor told BBC Radio Five Live.

Ireland caused major controversy in his native Ireland in September when he lied about the deaths of both his grandmothers to cover up the fact his partner had suffered a miscarriage.

He then made some ill-advised comments about how much he hated football on a website and last month put his entire international career on hold amid reports, subsequently denied, he had been attacked by some Ireland team-mates over his 'new' hairstyle.

"The lad has had serious personal problems," added Taylor.

"I am sure the whole football world will take an understanding attitude to this. Football is about joy and celebrating goals, as long as you don't go over the top."
