Ivanovic makes winning start

Second seed Ana Ivanovic opened her French Open campaign with a straight-sets win over Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson on Sunday.

The Serbian, who lost to Justine Henin in last year's final at Roland Garros, was not at her best on the Philippe Chatrier court but advanced with a 6-2 7-5 victory.

The 20-year-old will next play the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova, who beat Sandra Kloesel 6-1 6-1.

Elsewhere, Nicole Vaidisova became the first seed to fall in the women's draw after losing 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 to fellow Czech Iveta Benesova.

Vaidisova, seeded 15th, came to Paris on a five-match losing streak and could not arrest her slide on Court One.

Meanwhile, James Blake and David Nalbandian made short work of their first-round opponents as they eased to straight-sets victories.

Seventh seed Blake, from the United States, was a comfortable 6-4 6-1 7-6 (7/3) winner over Germany's Rainer Schuettler on Court One.

Blake will play either Ernest Gulbis or Simon Greul next as he embarks on a bid to progress past the third round in Paris for the first time.

Nalbandian, the sixth seed, also showed no mercy as he swept past fellow Argentinian Carlos Berlocq 6-2 6-4 6-1 on the Suzanne Lenglen court.

Nalbandian, twice a semi-finalist here, needed less than two hours to complete the win and set up a second-round clash against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who beat Frederico Gil in three sets.
