Jag in vintage form - Moyes

Everton manager David Moyes believes star defender Phil Jagielka justified his first start for England this week and will be key to Sunday's FA Cup fifth-round home clash with Aston Villa.

Moyes insists that only Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic has produced better form in defence than Jagielka this season.

He said: "I am sure Phil will get a great reception from Everton fans and of course he is very important to us. Jagielka's form has merited him playing for England. With maybe the exception of Vidic, he has been the outstanding centre-half in the country this season."

He added: "He did very well while he was on, mopping up a few things that had gone on around him. The only mistake he made was the pass into midfield which led to Spain's first goal.

"But he did very well apart from that and certainly deserved to start for England. But he will also have learned from what happened.

"He certainly deserved his start in the England team. I was as pleased for him as I am disappointed by Mikel Arteta still being overlooked by Spain.

"Obviously they have some very good players to pick from, but if he had been included in their squad he still would not have been out of place.

"Nobody could have complained. And he certainly would not have been out of place playing against whoever England had in their midfield. He has proved he is a match for any of them, week in week out, in the Premier League.

"He has always done well. If he keeps playing to the standard he has been it will make it even harder for their manager to keep overlooking him."

Everton will be without the cup-tied Jo, on loan from Manchester City, while record signing Marouane Fellaini is also out with a damaged back, a small crack in a bone now expected to keep him out for three weeks.
