James happy with Pompey life

David James is preparing to face Manchester City for the first time since the stunning takeover of the Abu Dhabi United Group, but insists he is not remotely envious of his former club's new riches.

James, who played his part in Portsmouth's 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes in the club's first ever UEFA Cup outing, moved to Fratton Park from City two years ago and revived his career so superbly that he has regained his England place at the age of 36.

Ahead of Sunday's visit to Eastlands, he said: "The takeover is good for football if only because it's another variation which keeps people interested."

He added: "Whether it works or not is down to influences from the manager or whoever else - but it's good to see.

"I'm assuming the money is coming straight from the new guys' pockets as opposed to trying to squeeze it out of the fans. The opposite has happened before hasn't it?

"It's good for football that people with money are still showing interest in investing in the club and providing the club itself with benefits.

"For me as a player and also a football fan, the most important thing about him coming in is it isn't going to take money out of the supporters.

"Instead it's going to be taken out of some rich guy's drip. So it's good for football."
