Jankovic: Fate threw us together
09 January 2007
The 22-year-old from Belgrade was initially reluctant to partner Murray in the mixed doubles because she felt it would affect her chances of landing the singles crown, but the third seed was left with one title chance after suffering a shock fourth-round defeat by Marion Bartoli.
"It was amazing," said Jankovic. "Then two weeks ago we arrived at the same time in the vans and he said 'will you play with me?' I said, okay, go and sign. I didn't think too much. Maybe it was like destiny, it was meant to happen."
She added: "We won this tournament so I made a good decision and I'm very, very happy.
"Playing with Jamie was a great experience. He's a very nice guy, very sweet as well."
Murray, who has not looked back since deciding to concentrate solely on doubles, emerged from the shadow of younger brother Andy, the world number eight, to become Britain's first Wimbledon champion for 20 years.
Andy, who was forced to withdraw from the Championships after failing to recover from a wrist injury, watched from the stands as Murray and Jankovic emulated Jeremy Bates and Jo Durie, who lifted the mixed doubles title in 1987, and collected a £90,000 prize.
Jamie, who reached the third round of the men's doubles with American Eric Butorac, conceded he had not seen himself as a serious contender for a Wimbledon title this year.
"No, of course not," he said. "I can't honestly ever think that I would or say that thought I would win one, especially this year, and also in the mixed doubles.
"But it's happened and I'm loving it. I don't know if it's sunk in but it feels pretty good."
