Jones keen to make history

Cardiff boss Dave Jones challenged his players to claim their place in the history books after watching them book an FA Cup semi-final trip to Wembley with a 2-0 win at Middlesbrough.

It is 81 years since the Welsh club became the first, and to date, only team to take the famous trophy out of England, and while Jones insists they should be proud of that achievement, he is adamant that the past should remain in the past.

He said: "Listen, I have 1927 rammed down my throat every day. At the end of the day, I have always maintained that is the history of the club, put it where it belongs. It doesn't affect me in any way."

He added: "The team that won the cup and got there, they deserve all the accolades that were given to them and are still given to them because they achieved something that was phenomenal.

"All I can do is try to make my own history within the football club, and the players today have gone a long way towards doing that.

"It seems to be the year of the underdog somewhere along the line in this cup competition. Now that we have got there, if we went and won the FA Cup, they would be saying we won't do well in Europe. All we can do is keep doing our best. That's what they are paid to do. It's a great achievement."

The victory was earned by a superb display from Cardiff, who face a High Court showdown over a £24million debt this week, at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro were woeful and tested goalkeeper Peter Enckelman only once as a repeat of their UEFA Cup heroics against Basle and Steaua Bucharest failed to materialise.

Manager Gareth Southgate said: "We have to hold our hands up - Cardiff were the better side right throughout and we didn't perform on the day.

"With everybody going out yesterday, it suddenly dawned on us that we had a fantastic opportunity. Whether we froze or whether the occasion was too much, I don't know, but we didn't perform and we can have no complaints."
