Joyful Giles hoping for new chance
10 January 2007
The 34-year-old left-arm spinner has had the last two years of his career decimated by hip injuries, which have sidelined for the last two domestic seasons and restricted him to only four Test appearances since being a key member of the side which won the Ashes in 2005.
"When you've played at the highest level a lot, that love of the game is perhaps taken away from you because of the pressure and everything else that goes with it," explained Giles.
"But getting back to Warwickshire this summer has taught me how much I love the game still and I still think I have something to offer the young guys."
Giles still has another month before he can begin running again following his third hip operation earlier this summer and another two months after that before he will be able to play again.
Between now and then he faces several key meetings with specialists which will determine whether the last setback has ended a career which included 54 Tests - the last coming in the opening two Tests of last winter's Ashes series - and 62 one-day internationals.
"I've never thought it's not worth it, but I have to start thinking about it. If, in five years' time, they think this will have done more damage then I'll have to take that advice - I certainly don't want to be looking at hip replacements," he explained.
"It's a difficult time because cricket is what I do and cricket is what I've done for 20 years, but I do have to start thinking about the implications.
"It's great to keep going and saying to yourself: 'I'll be fine', but the chances of recurrences are very high and I can't keep going through operations."
