Kear delight as Wildcats dominate
08 January 2008
The Tigers battled bravely as they sought to make amends for their 54-16 hammering by the Wildcats in Cardiff but they could not prevent their near neighbours clinching a third derby win of the season and their ninth in a row going back to 2003.
"We knew Cas would really front up because they were hurting from the Millennium Stadium," said Kear.
"It's a tough place to come and I'm delighted with how we played. I thought our pivotal players were smart."
Half-backs Danny Brough and Jamie Rooney, who were both returning to their former club, were among Wakefield's tryscorers but Kear singled out hooker Sam Obst for special praise.
He added: "Danny Brough, who was very nervous about coming back here, played very well but I thought Sam Obst was sensational. For him to play as long as he played and make as many tackles as he did and still be a threat was very impressive."
Wakefield's players wore black armbands in respect of Brad Drew's father, who passed away in Australia last week, and Kear said the former Huddersfield player was among the team's thoughts throughout the match.
"It's a very tight group and if one hurts, we all hurt," said Kear. "We all feel for Brad."
Early tries from half-backs Luke Dorn and Ryan McGoldrick twice gave Castleford the lead and, after trailing 18-10 at the break, they cut the deficit to just two points on 54 minutes when Dorn scored his second try.
But the game turned on the decision of video referee Ashley Klein to award Rooney a try on 65 minutes after the ball came free from the grasp of winger Sean Gleeson just short of the line and Wakefield secured a flattering victory margin when ex-Castleford winger Damien Blanch scored his second breakaway try in the dying moments.
