Keegan future in question

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is reportedly on the brink of leaving the club after holding a meeting with club owner Mike Ashley.

Speculation in the north east is mounting that Keegan's second reign as Newcastle boss could be drawing to a close.

Rumours began to circulate early on Tuesday after Keegan's hoped for three or four major signings failed to materialise as the transfer window closed at midnight on Monday.

There were suggestions the 57-year-old had been called to a meeting with Ashley on Tuesday morning, although he was understood to be at the club's Darsley Park training ground as those players not on international duty arrived for training.

However, Sky Sports News claim Keegan did not take training and was locked in talks with the club's board.

Keegan was appointed Newcastle manager for a second time on January 16 after the sacking of Sam Allardyce.

Following a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Newcastle and England he retired from playing in 1984 but returned to the game as Newcastle boss in 1992 before also going on to manage Fulham, England and Manchester City.

He went back to St James' Park earlier this year but was thought to be unhappy with restructuring at the club which saw Dennis Wise appointed as executive director (football).

Keegan recently claimed James Milner would not be sold - only for the midfielder to join Aston Villa in a £12million deal.

But having been unable to add to the signings of Argentinian pair Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez with several big-name stars Keegan is believed to have become disillusioned with his lot at Newcastle.
