Keegan open to Shearer return

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has not given up on Alan Shearer returning to the club in some capacity.

United assistant manager Nigel Pearson quit his post at the weekend and although former England striker Shearer turned down the chance to move to St James' Park in that capacity last month, Keegan has reiterated the door remains open for a place in the new set-up.

Keegan told the Daily Mail: "I've definitely not given up on it. What we have agreed is that he is going to come in training with us to start off with and then we are going to revisit it later when the commitments that he's made to other people are no longer in place."

He added: "The door is left absolutely wide open. It's up to Alan and me to come up with the right solution for him coming in here. I've left the door wide open because I respect him and know that he would bring something to the party.

"He's now got a bit of time to think about it and he will think about it deeply.

"As he always has done in his life, he will come up with the right decision. I've definitely not given up on it and Alan's not said anything to my knowledge that suggests he doesn't want to do it. I think deep down he does."

Newcastle are in need of a shake-up after a stretch of nine Barclays Premier League contests without a win, the latest a 4-1 drubbing at Aston Villa.

Shearer is currently contracted to BBC television - commitments integral to him turning down the chance to be Keegan's deputy - and any involvement this season will be part-time.

The former England captain, 37, distanced himself from a potential foray into management with his first club Southampton on Monday citing his busy schedule as an obstacle.

Newcastle - currently six points above the relegation zone - face a challenging fixture list over the next month with a home match against Manchester United followed by a trip to Liverpool.
