Keothavong gifted last-four berth

Anne Keothavong is just one match away from appearing in her first WTA Tour final after Ajumi Morita retired after one set of their quarter-final match at the ASB Classic in Auckland on Thursday.

The British number one had breezed through the opening set, clinching it 6-0 in just 22 minutes, when her Japanese opponent called a premature end to the match because of a hamstring injury.

That meant Keothavong progressed to the last four of a WTA Tour event for only the second time in her career, after reaching the semi-finals in Kolkata in 2007. The 25-year-old will now meet Elena Vesnina in the last four.

Vesnina ended the hopes of 19-year-old Nicole Vaidisova on Wednesday and proved too strong for second seed Caroline Wozniacki in the last eight, clinching a 6-3 0-6 6-3 win.

Elena Dementieva cruised into the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-1 win over Shahar Peer.

The top seed will next face Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai, who overcame Edina Gallovits 6-3 6-2.
