Kibet, the first Kenyan champion since Daniel Wakiihuri claimed his title 20 years ago in Rome, was followed home by Mubarek Hassan Shami and Viktor Rothlin.

Kenyan-born Shami, now representing Qatar and losing his first ever marathon in six competitions, finished in two hours 17min 18sec.

Rothlin, last year's European silver medallist with a strong finish, took third place in a time of two hours 17min 25sec.
