Kirsten accepts India role

Gary Kirsten has agreed to become India's new coach.

The former South Africa opener has successfully negotiated a two-year deal which will start on March 1, 2008.

It is believed the Board of Control for Cricket in India wanted Kirsten to take charge for the forthcoming tour of Australia but the 40-year-old will only join the team Down Under for a short spell.

He told Indian television channel NDTV: "I will go to Australia as a consultant. I told BCCI I will not be available for Australia."

When asked if he thought his appointment would go down well with the players, he responded: "I have no concerns what the players think about my appointment."
