Laws reveals replay poser

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws was left weighing up the pros and cons of an FA Cup third-round replay after blowing the chance of taking a Barclays Premier League scalp.

After 23 minutes the Owls led 2-0, but then the hosts did something they have not managed this term and that was to come from behind to snatch a result.

It means the two sides will meet again at Hillsborough on Tuesday, January 15, with Laws unsure as to whether the extra game is good or bad, saying: "Both teams have got a bite of the cherry again, but it's probably another game we don't want. We've already been through a hectic Christmas period, and we want a bit of a rest from games, but now we'll both be it at again."

He added: "But then we want to do really well in this competition because financially the rewards are greater for us as we haven't any money. It might help us to strengthen the team, so from that point of view it is a welcome second game."

Even though the Coca-Cola Championship strugglers have home advantage next week, Laws insists Derby will be favourites due to their Premier League status.

But he also knows his side should have finished the tie at Pride Park, adding: "We knew Derby were lacking in confidence. We knew they had not won many games, and they had not come back from going a goal down all season.

"When we had two, we thought our luck was in but, credit to them, they got themselves back in it and made it difficult. It's an opportunity missed. Away from home against a Premier League side, we found ourselves 2-0 up and we looked in a very comfortable position. So of both managers, if you're 2-0 up, who is going to be the most disappointed? I'm afraid I am."

Goalkeeper Lewis Price gifted 18-year-old centre-back Mark Beevers the first goal of his fledgling career in the eighth minute by spilling his shot over the line. Then centre-back Darren Moore's error allowed former Rams striker Marcus Tudgay to poach the second midway through the half.

However, goals from Kenny Miller and Giles Barnes ensured boss Paul Jewell will return to his former club for the replay, and Jewell said: "A month ago, we would have lost that game heavily, but we showed good character to come back. We made the usual basic errors, but I am taking the positives out of the game.

"The situation we're in at the moment, we have to take any crumb of comfort we can, and a 2-2 draw with a team near the bottom of the Championship, on reflection, is not a great thing. But we were 2-0 down and staring down a barrel, so I'm pleased we're still in the hat, and pleased we've come back from a goal down, which we've not done since I've been here."
