Laxman century frustrates Australia

India went into lunch on 393 for three with Gambhir (191 not out) fast closing in on a double hundred and Laxman batting on 104.
Ricky Ponting's side continued to chase the game as Gambhir and Laxman accelerated quickly out of the blocks when play resumed on Thursday.
Ponting's hopes of striking with the second new ball quickly evaporated and was replaced by desperation as Gambhir and Laxman continued to frustrate.
Paceman Brett Lee had started off proceedings by rapping Laxman on the pads and pleading his case for leg before. Umpire Billy Bowden, however, dismissed the appeal and Laxman responded by hitting Lee for two boundaries in his next over.
Laxman continued to pick boundaries at will, adding five more to the four he had hit on the first day.
He briefly took his foot off the pedal as he neared his century, but brought up his 100 with a cover driven boundary of leg-spinner Cameron White.
Gambhir, who was on 149 overnight, was fortunate when an edge off White fell just wide of Matthew Hayden at first slip, the only blemish in an otherwise fine session for the diminutive left-hander.
