Australia had been dismissed in their innings shortly before lunch for 463 after Andrew Symonds had helped stage a recovery from a disappointing middle session on Wednesday that had seen the hosts lose four quick wickets to go 134 for six.
Wasim Jaffer and Rahul Dravid took to the crease as India began their innings shortly before lunch and the former was dismissed in the sixth over when he was bowled out by Brett Lee for three.
Laxman joined Dravid in the middle and the two produced an impressive stand for the remainder of the session, with Laxman hitting 14 fours while Dravid reached tea 18 not out.
Earlier, Australia had began the morning 376 for seven before Lee racked up his fourth Test half-century until he fell out lbw for 59.
Mitchell Johnson hit 28 runs off 30 balls before he was caught on leg-side boundary while Stuart Clark was trapped lbw for a duck by Anil Kumble.
Symonds, who had finished the opening day on 137, added a further 25 runs before leaving the SCG to a standing ovation.
Australia lead the four-match series 1-0 with India trailing by 362 in the second Test.
