Lehmann contemplates retirement

Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is considering retiring after Euro 2008.

The veteran custodian, whose contract is up at the end of the season, has been out of favour at the Emirates Stadium this season, with Manuel Almunia preferred by coach Arsene Wenger between the sticks.

"I don't know what I will do after the summer," the 38-year-old told www.fifa.com. "I will play the European Championship and then it depends on whether I get a good offer."

He added: "If I do, I might play on another two years, and if not, I might retire probably."

The battle for number-one status is nothing new for Lehmann, who was in competition with Oliver Kahn in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup.

Lehmann believes that experience made him a better player.

"Before I was made the number one, I was given the chance to compete for the shirt," he said.

"I competed and I played nearly flawlessly for two and a half years. The pressure was so big. For me it was fantastic."
