Calzaghe has already started to backtrack on his vow to make the Madison Square Garden clash his last, with fellow light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson calling for the Welshman to set up another super-fight.

But Lewis, who quit as champion after defeating Vitali Klitschko in 2003 and resisted all temptation to return, said: "Joe has beaten everyone there is to beat and has nothing else to prove so I think he should retire."

Lewis' view was echoed by Calzaghe's former promoter Frank Warren, who admitted he expected Calzaghe to fight on.

Warren told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek: "I think he will fight on. He may say that he's not - before the fight he was saying it was his last, now he's saying he's not sure.

"Joe has got nothing else to prove. He is without doubt the greatest super-middleweight of all time, and to me he is the best British fighter certainly since the Second World War. His record speaks for itself.

"They say fighters are the last people who know when it's time to quit. I don't believe that, but I think they're the last people to admit it. I think everybody around him including his family would like him to retire."

Calzaghe is believed to have a clause in his contract for a rematch with Jones, although it remains to be seen how marketable an option that could be given the comprehensive nature of his win.

Another option could be a rematch with Bernard Hopkins while reigning IBF light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson - who beat Antonio Tarver last month - is keen on a Millennium Stadium showdown.

Dawson said: "Joe has a lot to be proud of and I for one am very impressed. If Joe wants to have his grand farewell in Wales, I am ready to accommodate. I'm ready to give Joe the opportunity to draw the curtain on his great career in front of his family and friends and 70,000 fans. It's the best fight in the light-heavyweight division between two undefeated champions."
