Les Bleus' hopes of a grand slam were dashed by Brian Ashton's World Cup finalists but they bounced back to beat the Azzurri in Paris on Sunday and keep the tournament alive heading into the final weekend.
"It is a victory a fortnight after the defeat to England, which was an enormous failure for us," he said.
"We waited for this match and gave it a lot of attention. We knew it was going to be extremely difficult as they had lost three games and did not want to lose a fourth.
"They had the weapons to worry us, especially in the set-piece and with their big defence.
"But although we missed a lot of line-outs, we found what we needed to win and create the opportunities to get through their defence.
"We made a few errors, but overall it is positive."
France head into Saturday's showdown with unbeaten Wales knowing they will need to triumph by at least 20 points if they are to claim their third Six Nations crown in succession.
Les Bleus captain Lionel Nallet appreciates it will be a tough test for his side at the Millennium Stadium, but was thrilled to have got back to winning ways.
"It is clear that it is going to be tricky against Wales, but we are just happy to have beaten Italy. They have shown over the years that they are getting harder and harder to beat."
