Lions mauled by New Zealand

England Lions brought their tour of New Zealand to a disappointing close, slumping to an 84-run defeat in the Twenty20 clash at Pukekura Park.

The result means the tourists return home winless despite dominating the earlier four-day series for large parts.

Shanan Stewart was the match winner for New Zealand A, clubbing an unbeaten 88 from just 39 deliveries in his side's 227 for six, while Gareth Hopkins chipped in with an 18-ball 41 at number seven.

The pair cleared the ropes nine times between them, with Stewart hitting seven sixes.

Nobody escaped punishment for the bowling side, but Samit Patel came off worse than most, leaking 53 runs from his four overs.

Robert Key's Lions have proved no more attuned to the short form of the game than England's senior side so far and that score always looked too steep.

But the task was made even harder when both Key and Joe Denly were run out with just 19 on the scoreboard.

The in-form Jonathan Trott and Twenty20 specialist Graham Napier followed, for six and 10 respectively, and with them went the tourists' hopes of victory.

Patel, overlooked by England for the one-day series in the West Indies due to concerns over his fitness and weight, offered some resistance with a quickfire 64 that included six fours and five sixes.

But it was destined to be in a losing cause as the innings folded for 143 with 3.2 overs left.
