Lloyd looking for Davis Cup hero

John Lloyd is looking for a hero when Great Britain face Poland in a Davis Cup relegation play-off, which starts on Friday.

Andy Murray is established as British number one but no-one has shown a level of consistency to secure the next slot on the team. Dan Evans and James Ward are both in contention to get one of the places - the draw is made today - when the tie begins in Liverpool.

"I would like to have an established number two but it has not happened yet. You are looking for someone to step up to the plate in the Davis Cup," said team captain Lloyd.

"There is nothing like this event. It is a different beast due to the pressure and all that stuff.

"It is an opportunity for one of the guys to do that. Hopefully this will be the turning point."

World number three Murray returns to action at the Echo Arena after the disappointment of losing to Marin Cilic in the fourth round of the US Open in New York.

The Scot, who has a fine record in Davis Cup singles with an eight-match winning streak, is keen to help the team retain their status.

He said: "This is the one time you get to play as a team.

"The atmosphere is different to anything on the tour. Wimbledon is a little bit similar to a Davis Cup match. Some of the best atmospheres I have played in have been in Davis Cup.

"The only singles match I lost was against Switzerland, so I want to try and keep my unbeaten run going."
