Lloyd: Young guns must fire

John Lloyd has called on Great Britain's next generation of tennis stars to "raise their level" and win a place in the side to face top seeds Croatia in the Davis Cup World Group play-offs.

Lloyd's side were pitted against the 2005 winners in Wednesday's draw in London, and with former British number one Greg Rusedski now retired, the 52-year-old captain knows he will need a strong team to compete.

"The likes of Richard Bloomfield, Jamie Baker and Alan Mackin are all in contention, and Alex Bogdanovic is working hard to try and get some wins and prove he's worthy of a place," said Lloyd. "We're pushing them big time and they know they have to raise their level."

He added: "They want to earn a place but they've got to work bloody hard and pull out of the Challenger Tour level that some of them are at and get in to mix it with the big boys."

Andy Murray and Tim Henman are now unrivalled as Great Britain's top two players but one player - Andy's brother Jamie - has already stepped up to prove his worth.

He successfully partnered Rusedski in the veteran's final Davis Cup match as Britain secured their place in the World Group play-offs with a resounding 4-1 win over Holland.

Lloyd added: "For us to lose one set in the three 'live' matches is pretty special and doesn't happen often in the Davis Cup, but the best thing was emergence of Jamie Murray.

"That was the great thing for me [against Holland], Jamie's performance.

"For me, the Davis Cup is the biggest challenge for our players - bigger than Wimbledon, bigger than the grand slams, because you're playing for your country.

"He came in for his debut and played like a veteran and we've now got a world-class doubles player in the mix."
