Long to consider quitting Saints

Sean Long could quit St Helens at the end of the season after being told he can speak to rival Super League clubs.

The 32-year-old former Great Britain scrum-half insists it would "kill" him to leave the club after 12 years but he will consider it after being told Saints are only prepared to offer him a one-year contract.

"Obviously I'd like to stop at St Helens to finish my career but, if another club comes in with a two-year deal, I've got to consider it," he told BBC Sport.

Long, who has helped the club win the Challenge Cup five times and become Super League champions on four occasions in his time at Knowsley Road, is out of contract at the end of the season.

He has a meeting planned for the end the month with St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus but said he was not confident of getting the two-year deal he was hoping for.

"He said there will be an offer on the table but it will probably only be a one-year deal," said Long. "He's given me the option to speak to other clubs so I may as well see what's out there.

"It would absolutely kill me (to leave). I've made some great friends here. I love the club, I love the style of rugby we play.

"The fans have always been fantastic with me. Hopefully I can get it sorted out and finish my career at St Helens."

Long, who previously played for Wigan and Widnes, signed a new two-year contract in 2007.

He is second in the club's all-time list of scorers with 2,586 points from 319 appearances.
