Long upset by Saints treatment

Sean Long admits he was upset not to have been offered a new two-year deal at St Helens but now is excited about joining Hull.

Saints legend Long signed for Hull on Monday for the 2010 and 2011 seasons after being given permission to speak to other clubs.

Long told the BBC: "It was a difficult decision. I've been there 12 years and as I said before, it would kill me leaving St Helens."

The Merseyside outfit were unwilling to offer the 32-year-old more than a one-year extension despite a glittering 12-year career at Knowsley Road. Since joining the club from Widnes in 1997, scrum-half Long has won four Super League titles, five Challenge Cups, the Lance Todd Trophy three times and the Man of Steel award.

"There was only a one-year deal on the table - and that wasn't really on the table anyway. They talked about it but there was nothing on paper," he added.

"It was quite upsetting, but it is time to move on. I have had some great years at St Helens. I took my time and spoke to three or four other clubs but Hull was the one that jumped out at me. It was quite an easy decision in the end.

"I'm looking forward to a new challenge at Hull. I'm like a kid looking forward to going to a new school."

Long will be joined at the KC Stadium next season by Australia second row Craig Fitzgibbon, whose capture from Sydney Roosters was announced last month.

Former Great Britain international Long believes Hull coach Richard Agar is building a side that can challenge for silverware.

"It's a massive club and I am going there to win trophies," he added. "I see myself going there with a bit of experience and to guide the team around the park - I think that's what they're lacking really."
