The 30-year-old has achieved fourth-placed finishes at the past two Olympics and is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, but his victory score in the Hexham Combined Events International on Sunday fell short of the Olympic qualifying standard as he could only post a total of 7,491 points.

Macey said: "I now need to make a decision regarding my future. In the next week or two I'll make an announcement."

Macey sustained a groin injury in Saturday's long jump, the second of the 10 disciplines, which hampered him for the rest of the competition.

It was a battle-weary Macey who jogged the course of the 1,500metres - the final event in the decathlon - at the Tynedale Athletics Park to possibly bring the curtain down on a magnificent career.
